Passport Auto Transport is pleased to welcome the first in a series of quarterly reports from Hall of Fame Kustomizer John D’Agostino of Discovery Bay, California. John’s reports will feature insightful commentary from his participation in Hot Rod, Street Rod, Muscle Car and
Custom shows around the world:
Greetings, I’m pleased and honored to
write a column for FedEx Custom Critical Passport Auto Transport, a company that I have a long history with.
In this article, I thought I'd introduce some of my Kustom Kar creations.
My latest is the “Gable,” a 1941 Packard, restyled similar to the famed “Hollywood
Darrins” created by “Dutch” Darrin in the 1930s for some of the most famous movie stars of the day. The “Gable” is a tribute to film star Clark Gable, who had a lifelong love affair with fine automobiles such as
Packards, Duesenburgs and Jaguars. Like the 1938 Lincoln Zephyr Kustom that was the top money car at
the January 2004 Barrett-Jackson auction, it features its original motor, a smooth-running Packard straight eight.
The “Gable” has been a consistent major-award winner, taking the Goodguys “Custom D’Elegance of the Year” for 2004. It was also part of a three-car display that included my ultra-rare ‘58 Eldorado Brougham “Emerald Mist” and my ’67 Eldorado “El Conquistador” at the San Francisco Rod Custom and Motorcycle Show where I was honored as “Trendsetter of the Year” and “Builder of the Year.”
Having just returned from a European tour with my restyled 1956 Packard
Carribean, I look forward to my next column, which will feature coverage of the unique European Hot Rod and
Custom scene. Until then,
Kustoms Forever,
John D'Agostino
